Senior Life

The baby boomers are turning 65 every day and more of them are working longer in order to make ends meet.  I enrolled one woman who was still working at 71 as a nurse in a maternity ward.

If you are still covered under your group health insurance you do not need to enroll in Medicare Part B until you actually leave the employer group plan (not using COBRA though).  If you leave employment after age 65 then you do need to enroll in Medicare Part B, which in 2022 is $170.10, and will most certainly be going up next year.

Although you need to enroll in Part B, you have many options for Medicare coverage after that.  You may enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan - which are either PPO's, POS', or HMO plans.  Also available is a Medicare Supplement plan which has no network.  These plans usually range from $50 - $200 and beyond.  Although these plans are more expensive than Medicare Advantage plans, you have the ability to go to any doctor that you desire (as long as they accept Medicare).

Part D prescription plans are usually included in Medicare Advantage plans, but must be purchased separately if a Medicare Supplement plan is chosen.

Special enrollment periods allow Medicare beneficiaries to enroll in a plan outside of the annual enrollment period and include such things as moving, coming off of an employer group health plan, turning 65, coming off/on low income assistance, and quite a few other instances.  Different states also have different rules on when you can enroll into a Medicare plan.  Contact me if you have any questions about Medicare rules and regulations.  The "Medicare and You" book from CMS is 82 pages long.  If you do not have the interest in reading and understanding all 82 pages, definitely send me a message.

How To Save Money By Choosing the Health Insurance Best For you!

Most Americans struggle to figure out which health insurance plan will save them money.

A study of almost 24,000 employees at a major Fortune 100 company found that 61% of them chose the wrong plan for their needs. The researchers at Carnegie Mellon University who conducted the study estimated that the average employee could have saved $372 per year by choosing a different plan.

“The majority of employees chose plans that were more expensive, regardless of how much health care that they actually consumed the following year, and on average, the cost of these choices was about 2% of salary,” Carnegie Mellon associate professor of economics Saurabh Bhargava, who authored the study, told CNBC.

This is costing Americans. In 2018, over 8% of Americans’ total household spending went toward health-care costs. This represents about a 37% increase since 2004, up from 5.9% of total household spending.

Forty-six percent of Americans say it’s difficult for them to pay the out-of-pocket costs for medical care not covered by their insurance, according to an October 2021 poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation.

“It seems like people aren’t able to maximize their welfare because they’re having trouble understanding the decision environment,” said Anya Samek, associate professor of economics at the Rady School of Management at the University of California, San Diego.

One major issue in choosing a health-care plan is people don’t understand the lingo insurance companies use to discuss each plan. Only about 1 in 3 people are able to correctly identify three common health insurance terms: premiums, copays and deductibles, according to Policygenius’ 2020 Health Insurance Literacy Survey.

“This basic lack of literacy, I think, contributes to a number of problems that people have exhibited when they do choose from a plan,” Bhargava said.

Happy New Year 2022

Beware of fake customer service calls!

Many of our clients have been receiving fake customer service calls from solicitors claiming to be representatives of Social Security or Medicare. Please note: Social Security and Medicare will never call you to ask you for your information or tell you that you have benefits that you are entitled to. If you are receiving these calls, please beware; they are solicitors!

RV Sales are increasing

RV Sales are rising

Many seniors are retiring and wanting to travel.  That may be the reason why RV sales are increasing at such a rate as seen in this video:

RV Sales are increasing

Have you purchased an RV and plan to travel in it either full or part time?  What is your opinion on the build quality?  As I saw in some of the comments on the video above build quality seems to be an issue.  I have gone camping in a tent a few times in my life, but just for a few days at most.

RV and #vanlife people have increasingly been using these vehicles to live in either full or part time, not as occasional vacation vehicles.  It's an interesting trend as housing prices are rising.

Let me know if you have an RV or van and are traveling in it full or part time.

Telemedicine during Coronavirus - Covid 19

Telemedicine - setting up a telephone appointment with your doctor is an excellent way to shelter in place, as well as allay any fears you have about potential symptoms from the Coronavirus.  Many of the insurance companies have set up policies where telemedicine is low to no cost.

Also, many insurance companies are waiving any fees, copays, deductibles, and coinsurance for any visits and/or tests associated with the Covid 19.  Excellent news for the most fragile demographic and the hardest hit demographic in this worldwide pandemic - those people age 65 and over.

It's a stressful time for all of us as none of us can do any of the things that were commonplace just a few weeks ago.  Things like going out to dinner. meeting friends for lunch, taking a walk down the street and not have to worry about maintaining a six foot distance between you and any other stranger.  Sports are no longer on television, an you are not allowed to convene with 50,000 other screaming fans at a sports complex.

If you are age 65 and older, please take the shelter in place order seriously.  This virus has hit the over 65 demographic at an alarming rate.  If you have heart disease, diabetes, are overweight and have any other serious health conditions please stay indoors.  There are many different stores that will deliver groceries right to your door and many of them are now delivering toilet paper.  Not only food stores are delivering, but many of the restaurants in your area are delivering meals as well.

Regarding telemedicine - I have used it myself with my own primary care physician for some clarification on a small issue I was having.  It was very helpful, and I used video conferencing to explain my situation.  If you do not have experience with video conferencing, the doctor will be happy to just give you a call and discuss any symptoms or concerns you may be having.

Let all hope and pray that doctors and immunologists find a treatment, and hopefully a vaccine to combat this virus.  Who will be the next Marie Curie or Jonas Salk.  I have always been interested in visionaries who do not succumb to fear and are willing to look into solving a crisis rather than fanning the flames.  Jonas Salk created the vaccine for the polio virus that ran rampant throughout society in the early 20th century.  If polio can be cured, certainly with all of the blazing fast computing power that is available today that some ardent researcher will be able to find a cure and deploy it rapidly in society.

Stay safe and healthy everyone and certainly call me with any questions about your health plan.

~Linda

Shingles Vaccine

It has been recommended by many doctors that getting a shingles vaccine will help to prevent you from getting shingles.  Medicare, and therefore all insurance plans that cover Medicare, cover the shingles vaccine.  Ask me how to get this for free!

Turning Age 65

So you are turning age 65 and you have been receiving all kinds of mail from the government, insurance companies, and agents advising you that you need to enroll in a Medicare plan.  Which one do you choose?  How did you get to be age 65 so quickly!?

Medicare Open Enrollment

It is almost time for the open enrollment period for Medicare plans, but did you know that any time you move you should check to make sure that your insurance company has a plan in the new area that you are moving to?  Insurance companies call these "service areas" - meaning that a group of doctors and hospitals that are in one part of the state or region but not be within driving distance for you once you move.

Any time you move you should ask your agent or insurance company if there are any issues with your access to doctors and hospitals, as well as pharmacies.

Many people on Medicare move for all kinds of reasons.  Retirement, moving to be close to grandchildren, downsizing, warmer (or colder!) climate, job changes - or even a sense of adventure.  You definitely want to contact me and
